Simple anti-virus/anti-malware tests

28 08 2007

Before proceeding, these are not real virus that could harm your computer but just test files.

Thought let me check how good the anti-virus/firewall tools I use were and went on to do simple tests on them.

The tools I tested were,

David is doing some rigorous tests with various other tools. So mine is just a very small and simple test when compared to his 🙂

Ok, lets start with the test

  • Go to Eicar to download the anti-virus or anti-malware test files
  • You will find the files in that link above
  • Try to download them once with Firefox and then with Internet Explorer 7

Here are my results,

With Firefox

With Vista Ultimate + Kaspersky + Windows Defender

Firefox allowed me to save the files first time I downloaded them and Kaspersky didn’t detect them during the download. The download was complete and saved in a folder. Until I manually scanned the file with Kaspersky, it didnt popup that its a virus. Now, after this, if I try to download from firefox, it doesnt not even allow me to download and asks for to Allow or Deny

With Vista Business + Antivir + Windows Defender

Firefox allowed me to save the files every time I downloaded them and Antivir didn’t detect them during the download. The download was complete and saved in a folder. Until I manually scanned the file with Antivir, it didnt popup that its a virus. Now, after this, if I try to download from firefox, its the same – I can download and save the files and Antivir doesnt even detect them.

With IE7

With Vista Ultimate + Kaspersky + Windows Defender

Kaspersky immidiately threw the popup that the file is a virus and to Allow or Deny when I click on the files to download. This is great !
With Vista Business + Antivir + Windows Defender

Here it was bit different. IE7 allowed me to download and once the download was completed, Windows Defender immediately threw the popup that the file may be a virus and to Delete All or Ignore when I click on the files to download. Once I clicked on Delete All, it was fully deleted from the temp folders too. This is not bad :), but remember, Windows Defender came up before Antivir can detect it as a threat !
