Autopatcher Project closed !

29 08 2007

If you are not aware of the Autopatcher – A single program which delivers Windows Updates (for every month or so) and Autopatcher comes bundled in many of the latest Computer Magazines and also downloadable from the Autopatcher website.

It looks like Microsoft, after leaving Autopatcher to enjoy nearly 4 years ,they have now told them that they cannot deliver updates from their Servers and the updates have to come through Windows Updates and has ceased the autopatcher project. I was expecting this kinda reply from Microsoft from the day I tried autopatcher and here we are now.

Not to mention that Autopatcher also bypasses the Windows Genuine Advantage which certain updates may require if you are installing via the Windows Update Service.

To quote from their website

Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do very little, and although the download page is merely a collection of mirrors, we took the download page down.

We would like to thank you for your support. For the past 4 years, it has been a blast. Unfortunately, it seems like it’s the end of AutoPatcher as we know it.

Comments are welcome…

Is this the end of Autopatcher project ?

The Autopatcher Forums at Neowin have been disabled too now for guests and members.

Anyway I haven’t used Autopatcher a lot and I would rely on Windows Update Services 🙂

I use AutoPatcher all the time…my friend who works @ the computer store introduced this app to me…they use this for building new PCs…but if MS is not happy about it…what can you do? 😦

Actually, I felt like they are violating few Microsoft Terms and Conditions, especially when you bypass the Genuine Advantage. But the question arises is, why did Microsoft left 4 years and now they told to close the project :)….anyways, I do agree that Autopatcher had to close one day or other and it has come now…

“why did Microsoft left 4 years and now they told to close the project”

In one of the replies from Microsoft, they were saying that:

“Windows Update for pre-Vista versions of Windows can now be accessed using Firefox”

So maybe thats one of the reasons why they closed it.

Look here –

This has more reasons and also if you follow the link to the discussion, you could see the actual terms and conditions snippets.
